Role of communities in conservation and protection of Mangroves
Local communities around the mangrove forest play a critical role in preserving the forest, as a result of which, the function of the forest can have positive impact not only on the community but also of the lives in the forest and the earth as a whole. Developing an understanding around the ecological, economical and social functions of a mangrove forest can help protect the mangroves, which ultimately can protect the coastal population from the different losses caused by disasters and climate change. There is a higher need for people’s involvement in planning, implementing, supervising, and evaluating the developmental programmes and projects, and thus sustaining the efforts.
Mangrove protection and restoration is one of the most viable climate mitigation measures. In the six year long ECRICC project, restoration of mangrove ecosystems in an area of 10575 hectares land, planting of mangrove propagules in degraded areas is one of the prime interventions.
